Just before midnight last evening, two fishing vessels, one leaving Newport, the other returning, came upon each other in the fog near the mouth of the Newport jaws. They were on a collision course. Both bridges tried evasive action but there was a collision anyway. The F/V Blue Horizon and the F/V Pegasus slammed into each other – the Pegasus suffering a 6-7 foot gash above its waterline. Neither vessel took on water nor was anyone injured.
Looking at the damage, it appears that the Blue Horizon T-Boned the Pegasus on it’s starboard side. It punched a hole in the Pegasus’s deck and dislodged a winch. Damage to the Blue Horizon seemed to be limited to damage to it’s anchor mounting assembly, along with a hole punched in it’s bow, but well above the water line.
Coast Guard North Bend said a full investigation into the circumstances leading up to the collision is already underway.
